3D printing on keychains in Georgia — SLA resin and FDM PETG from Tbilisi

SLA resin and FDM PETG keychains produced in our Tbilisi workshops for buyers in Georgia and the wider DCFTA region. We work in 50-micron detail or 100-micron draft, finish in paint and metallic leaf, and dispatch to Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi and abroad under EUR.1.

Why 3D printing works on a keychain when other decoration methods do not

UV printing onto a flat panel cannot reproduce a building, a vehicle silhouette or a 3D logo — it needs a flat surface and it lays down a 2D image. Laser engraving is two-dimensional too; it can mark the surface of a metal or leather tab, but it cannot build a shape. Embroidery, silk-screen and pad printing are all flat-surface decoration methods. When the brief says "give me fifty keychains shaped like our new office tower, with our logo embossed at half a millimetre", the answer is 3D printing.

3D printing builds the part from a 3D model file (STL or OBJ) layer by layer. It is the only mainstream decoration technology that lets us produce true 3D geometry with a logo or surface detail integrated into the geometry, not painted on afterwards. SLA (resin) is the choice for high detail, fine typography and translucent finishes. FDM (filament) is the choice for tougher, more flexible parts — pet-tag and industrial-style pieces that get dropped, sat on and chewed.

We work in a small-format SLA build volume at 50-micron layer height for high-detail parts and 100-micron for draft. FDM at 200-micron gives a slightly visible layer line that some buyers ask for as a visual feature and others ask us to hide under primer and paint. The brand mark goes into the model itself, not into a separate print pass. That is the difference between "branded at the surface" and "branded into the part".

Where the technology fits in a Georgian corporate merch order

The buyers who ask us for 3D-printed keychains tend to fall into four groups. The first is architecture and design firms in Tbilisi — a single architectural model reduced to a 50-millimetre keychain, given to client-handover meetings and the project close-out ceremony. The second is the fintech and crypto sector in Tbilisi and Batumi, where new-account welcome kits and partnership packs include a branded keychain carrying a 3D representation of the firm's app icon or a token symbol. The fourth is universities — Tbilisi State University, the Georgian Technical University, the University of Batumi, and several private schools that produce alumni give-aways and graduation merch.

For high-volume repeat work — say, 5,000 keychains carrying the same logo — we typically steer the buyer toward silk-screen on a metal or acrylic blank or toward laser engraving on stainless steel, both of which are also produced in Tbilisi. 3D printing is not the cheapest decoration method at volume; it is the right one for low-volume, complex-geometry briefs. The price-per-unit on a 100-piece run will be higher than a 5,000-piece run of an alternative; the brand result is also different, and that is what the buyer is paying for.

We are not a partner or sponsor of the architecture firms, fintechs, universities or alumni associations we produce merch for; we are an external supplier coordinating production on their order. References to those institutions on this page describe the buyer environment, not affiliations.

Materials, hardware and Pantone matching

Standard grade for SLA keychains is a clear or white castable resin, finished in primer, paint and a single-colour metallic leaf. We stock Phrozen Aqua-Gray 8K and Siraya Fast Meow for fast detail; for tougher SLA work — parts that go on a hotel housekeeping ring or a delivery driver's bag — we move to Siraya Tenacious, a tougher engineering resin that costs more per kilogram but survives drops and abrasion.

FDM is run on a Prusa MK4 in PETG — eSUN PETG Pro is the standard. PETG tolerates higher temperatures and more flex than PLA, which is why we use it for pet-tag style keychains and for any keychain that will spend its life on a carabiner outdoors. We avoid PLA for outdoor use because PLA softens above that temperature and warps; we avoid ABS for the same reason and because of the warping risk on a small build plate.

For Pantone matching we work to a Delta-E ≤ 2.5 in the painted finish. SLA resin prints in a single resin colour; full-colour 3D prints are not a routine product in our workshops. If the brand brief needs four or five brand colours on the part, we assemble separately-printed components at an assembly premium. The colour proof is signed off on the substrate before production starts; we do not start decoration until written sign-off.

Hardware is a 25-millimetre split ring or a 38-millimetre carabiner; we source rings from a Nikoferia metalwork supplier in Tbilisi and carabiners from a wholesale importer via the Lilo market. Spares are kept in stock; a replacement ring for a keychain delivered two years ago is a routine request and we can usually ship it the next morning.

Production specifics — cycles, post-processing and QC

Standard production is 1 day of design prep (or 0 days if the buyer has a print-ready STL), 1–3 days of print cycles depending on quantity and layer height, 1–2 days of support removal, sanding, primer, paint and metallic-leaf finish, and 1 day of QC and packaging. Total: 5–8 business days for a 50–200-unit run; longer for runs above 200 because of the queue-up of cycles on the build plate.

SLA runs on a Phrozen Sonic Mighty 8K with a 218×123×250 mm build volume. The largest single-piece keychain we routinely print is 70×70×12 mm, with larger custom keychains up to 250 mm in one dimension possible. FDM runs on a Prusa i3 MK4 with a 250×210×220 mm build volume; the largest FDM keychain is comparable in size but the layer line is visible if the buyer wants it visible, hidden if not.

Post-processing is hand work: support removal with a flush cutter, sanding from 220-grit to 600-grit for paint, paint in a spray booth, optional metallic leaf applied by hand and sealed with a matte or gloss topcoat. The finished part is then QC'd by eye against the colour proof — any part with a visible layer shift, support scar or paint defect is reprinted, not retouched. Retouching on a 3D-printed part is a tell; reprints are not.

Pricing, runs and lead times in Georgia

The realistic run for 3D-printed keychains in Tbilisi is 30 to 500 units. Below 30 units, the per-unit price rises sharply because of fixed setup time; above 500 units, we typically recommend an alternative technology for cost reasons. Volume pricing is real and is applied per-order, not as a marketing claim — a 100-piece run unlocks a lower tier than a 30-piece run on the same part, and the 100-piece quote is lower per unit than the 30-piece quote.

Quotes are in GEL for Georgian-resident buyers (VAT 18% via RS.ge), in EUR or USD for export, and we work with both Bank of Georgia and TBC Bank on transfers. For DCFTA-region buyers the EUR.1 movement certificate is available on request, which can zero the import duty on the buyer's side; we file the certificate with the dispatch paperwork and we have the documents in stock at our Tbilisi base.

Lead times for export to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova and the EU under DCFTA are 3–10 business days from dispatch, depending on the corridor. Inside Georgia we run same-day dispatch for Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Zugdidi, Poti, Gori, Telavi and other regional centres via local courier services; we also run direct delivery for buyers in Saburtalo and Chughureti for multi-entity orders.

Bundling, packaging and dispatch

Standard packaging is a 80×120 mm poly bag per keychain at a small per-unit uplift. VIP and partnership-pack tier uses a kraft gift box with a 1.5 mm cardboard insert at a higher per-unit uplift. Bulk dispatch goes in master cartons of 100 keychains per carton; the carton is labelled, weighed and stickered for courier dispatch with our standard dispatch paperwork.

For buyers shipping internationally, we prepare commercial invoices, packing lists, and — for DCFTA corridors — the EUR.1 movement certificate. The invoice lists the unit price, the decoration method, the country of origin, and the HS code for the product. We do not handle the buyer's import declaration; that is the buyer's responsibility at their end. We do provide the documents the buyer's broker needs to clear the goods.

For VIP programmes (10–29 units) we run a small-batch premium on the unit price; the premium reflects the fixed setup time. For rush runs from 2 business days we run a rush premium; rush is only available with press-ready artwork, signed-off colour proof and a confirmed delivery address.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest 3D printing size on a keychain?

The standard SLA build volume on Phrozen Sonic Mighty 8K is 218×123×250 mm. The largest standard keychain we print is 70×70×12 mm. Larger keychains up to 250 mm in one dimension are possible on a custom build. The largest FDM keychain is comparable. We will confirm the largest size the buyer needs before payment is sized.

Can 3D printing reproduce a complex 3D shape?

Yes — 3D printing builds the part directly from an STL or OBJ file. Complex shapes such as building models, 3D logos, figures and bespoke geometry are routine. The buyer can supply the file or our Tbilisi design team can produce the file from a sketch, photo or dimensioned drawing at a fixed design fee that is credited against the final order on confirmation.

Can 3D printing include metallic finishes?

Yes — paint and metallic leaf (gold, silver, chrome, copper) are available as a hand-applied finish on the printed part. The leaf is sealed with a topcoat for wear resistance. The finish is applied by hand in our Tbilisi workshop; expect a per-unit uplift on the price compared with a plain painted finish.

How durable is a 3D-printed resin keychain?

SLA clear resin survives 5+ years of daily pocket carry under normal use. SLA tough resin (Siraya Tenacious) is more impact-resistant and survives drops and abrasion better. FDM PETG is the toughest option we routinely print and survives a year on a hotel housekeeping keyring in a coastal climate; for harsher outdoor use we recommend a metal carabiner rather than a split ring.

Can each keychain carry a unique shape?

Yes — variable-data 3D printing is included up to 30 unique shapes per run, limited by the print batch. Above 30 unique shapes we charge a per-shape setup fee. Each shape needs its own STL or OBJ file; we accept a buyer-supplied archive of files or we prepare them from a buyer-supplied list of names, IDs or geometry parameters.

Can 3D printing print in full colour?

Limited — SLA prints in a single resin colour per part. Full multi-colour 3D prints at retail-purchase fidelity are not routine in our production. For a brand mark with two to five colours, the practical path is to assemble separately printed components at an assembly premium, or to use silk-screen or pad printing on the finished part as a secondary decoration pass.
